CHARACTER
Name: René Combeferre
Canon: Les Miserables
Age: 26
Timeline: June 6, 1832, the day the barricade fell.
Items with character at canon point: Combeferre has with him a gun in his waistband, a tricolor scarf around his waist, a pocket watch, and an apron over his clothing.
Personality:
Combeferre is an intelligent young man with a good heart. He truly believes in the cause he and his friends are fighting for, and while he abhors violence, he hates stagnation even more. It is his belief that wars would cease to exist in the future due to the natural progress of humanity.
Combeferre is quieter than most of the other members of the Friends of the ABC. He is well spoken and treats other with kindness and respect. Even when disagreeing with someone else he speaks his mind without being disrespectful. His speech tends to be formal, but, warms to familiarity when he knows someone. He considers the other members of the Friends of the ABC to be his brothers, and would not hesitate to embrace any one of them.
He is not one to stay silent if he sees injustice. Combeferre will do what he can to make it right, and is not above giving another person a lecture so they can see why their actions were wrong.
He is a 19th century nerd. Combeferre gets excited about science lectures, reads whatever he can get his hands on, has the ability to sketch things like moths from memory, and enjoys learning in general. He is genuinely excited about all of the scientific advances being made in his era---photography, the railroads, anesthesia for surgery--all of these things were in their infancy in his time, but he believed in all of them, and was excited to see them come to fruition.
Because he is so interested in science and progress he can unintentionally bore people at times, if he gets started on a subject. He can also be a little unaware of his surroundings and ramble if he's nervous.
He believes in equality and freedom for all. Victor Hugo wrote that Combeferre liked the word "citizen" but preferred the word "man" and would have liked to use the word "Hombre" like the Spanish. He is one of the more gentle members of the Friends of the ABC, and stated on more than one occasion that "the good must be innocent".
Combeferre loves his country and its people. Even the National Guard soldiers who ultimately killed him and his friends. He wants people to live.
By the time he was killed on the barricade, Combeferre was a young doctor. He was killed helping a wounded enemy soldier, taken down by three bayonets thrusts to the chest. René would be entering the city from this moment.

Abilities:
Combeferre went through military school before going into medical school. Therefore, he has knowledge of weaponry of the day, and medical training of the era. He can draw things from memory (a moth was the example Victor Hugo gave).

Prose Log Sample:
Combeferre was trying to read. It was really all he wanted to do this evening. And yet, he found he had to play mediator between the other Friends of the ABC. Without Enjolras present, their meeting had broken up into a social gathering.
"Jolllly, you do not have cholera. My friend, you are studying medicine, you know you do not have---fine. I will look at your tongue. Bahorel, why did you tell him has cholera? You know what he is like!
Joly. You are in perfect health."
This crisis with their resident hypochondriac resolved, Combeferre settled back in with his book. Courfeyrac and Bahorel sat at the table beside him and began a game of dominoes. Two moves in and fists were pounding the table with obscenities and insults flying back and forth, with a rouge domino flying across the room, striking Bossuet in the forehead.
Slowly Combeferre lowered his book to look at his friends, more amused than upset. "Do we need to switch to cards? Out of respect for Bossuet's face?"
Someone in the room commented that the unfortunate L'aigle was beyond help, which offended Joly on his friend's behalf, and a shouting match ensued, equal parts gleeful and annoyed.
It was at this point Enjolras arrived and, like schoolboys when the Headmaster arrived, the group of students quieted almost instantly. Combeferre sighed, and put his book in his jacket, knowing that now there was no way he would be able to read it.
Maybe the next night.
